Rabbi Berel Lazar

Chief Rabbi of Russia
Chairman of Rabbinical alliance of the CIS

A native of Milan, Italy, Rabbi Lazar was born in 1964 to parents who were among the first emissaries of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Until the age of 15, he studied in Milan’s Merkaz Jewish Day School. Afterwards, he went on to study in New York and pursued a degree in religious studies at the Rabbinical College of America in Morristown, New Jersey. At the age of 23, he was ordained at the Central Lubavitch Yeshiva in New York.

When the policies of Perestroika and Glasnost were first implemented by Gorbachov in 1987 heralding the end of the Soviet era, Rabbi Lazar was among the first rabbinical students to travel to Russia to run underground yeshivot and religious classes. In addition, he reached out to refuseniks (Jews who were denied permission to emigrate from the former Soviet Union) and put them in contact with sympathizers in the Western world.

In 1989, together with Zev Kuravsky, he opened the first Jewish day school in Moscow with only 17 students. Through the herculean efforts of Kuravsky and Rabbi Lazar, this tiny knot of dedicated students expanded beyond anyone’s expectations. Today, Rabbi Lazar and the Federation of Jewish Communities of the CIS oversee 62 Jewish Educational Institutions in 48 cities throughout the former Soviet Union with an aggregate enrollment exceeding 12,000 students.[more]
