The city of Krivoy Rog is situated in central Ukraine and is considered to be the eighth-largest city in the country with a population of 736,000.
It was founded 230 years ago, when metal treasures were discovered in the area. Today, Krivoy Rog provides 90 percent of metal produced in Ukraine and 30 per cent of metal produced in Europe. It is also one of the longest cities in Europe - 120 km long.
The Jewish population is estimated to be about 12,000 people.
The city is one of the more affluent cities in Ukraine, since its territory contains a wealth of valuable metals and hosts numerous metal-processing and production factories, in addition to other industrial activity.
The unemployment level is the lowest in Ukraine. Though a large part of the population lives in survivable economic conditions, local residents suffer from severe ecological problems.
Today, Chief Rabbi of Krivoy Rog Leron Ederi and community Chairman Alexander Uchitel head the Jewish community of Krivoy Rog.
