The Ohr Avner Chabad Day School of Kirovograd was registered as a legal educational institution in November 2000. It then welcomed its first 26 pupils in January 2001.
Today, over 45 pupils, ranging from grades one through seven, attend the school.
The city's Chief Rabbi Dan Zakuta directs the School.
The study day for children lasts from 8:00 AM to 4:15 PM. Jewish schoolchildren enjoy two kosher meals a day.
The Ohr Avner Chabad Day School is a primary source of knowledge for Jewish children. It represents their chance to receive both a traditional Jewish education and a good comprehensive general education.
In addition to studying the basic school disciplines, the children also engage in the thorough study of Hebrew, Jewish traditions and history. Deeply instilled with a Jewish atmosphere, the school runs various activities that allow the youngsters to become closer to Jewish customs and holidays.
For the Kabalat Shabbat ceremony on Fridays, schoolgirls bake Chalas and light the candles, while boys make the Kiddush.
Once a month the school holds the Rosh Chodesh celebration, where children sum up the latest events happening at the school. At that time, teachers deliver prizes to winners of competitions concerning the knowledge of Jewish traditions, as well as introducing new and upcoming activities.
The school's older pupils have founded a Jewish Children's Club. Mrs Sarah Zakuta frequently gives lectures on Judaism for the school's teaching staff. These lectures then allow the teachers to reveal new information and take new approaches in the disciplines they teach.
With every Jewish holiday, children decorate their classrooms. The school, its staff and atmosphere inspire the children with a special Jewish spirit that they then bring to the Jewish homes in the city.
It is expected that the school will move to a new, bigger building in the near future.
