Passover Celebrations in Armenia

Tuesday, April 18 2006

YEREVAN, Armenia – Students of the ‘Torah Ohr’ Sunday School, run by the Jewish Community of Armenia, have been looking forward to the day for their examination Seder. At the model Seder the children acted as hosts rather than guests. Prior to this demonstration, the children thoroughly studied the history of the Exodus and the laws of Passover and made drawings depicting the history of the Exodus. As well, participating in a real Seder conducted by Rabbi Gershon Meir Burshtein, the country’s Chief Rabbi and a Chabad Lubavitch emissary, allowed the kids to review everything they learned at school about Passover.

Although the main Seder was designed for the adults, the children also took the opportunity to attentively listen to everything that happened throughout the evening, which helped them in preparing to conduct their own “little Seder”.

On the day of the children’s Seder, everyone arrived on time and was in a good mood. The teachers took care of the food’s preparation in the school’s kosher kitchen. In the meantime, the children checked whether everything is in its proper place on the festive tables and put the Passover symbols on Keara. Finally, the Seder had begun. During the four-hour feast, parents acted as guests at the Seder.

The main idea of this examination was not only to check the children’s knowledge of Haggada, but to see what the children learned from participating in the first public Seder. Those who displayed practical knowledge about this received bonus points. The jury also judged the songs performed during the Seder, with the winners given the honor of saying a blessing over the next glass of grape juice.

The certitude and enthusiasm the kids demonstrated during the Seder lends us hope that these children will be among the builders of the Third Jerusalem Temple.
