Jewish communities in the FSU have a high percentage of elderly people, single parent homes, sick and disabled, and extremely poor families. Of the more than 2 million Jews,more than one-third live below the poverty line and basics like lack food, clothing and medicines.

The critical need for Jewish education in the countries of the former Soviet Union cannot be overstated. With the fall of Communism, the first and most pressing priority in reviving Jewish communities has been recreating Jewish educational institutions.

A very large number of children are living in poverty and other distressing conditions. Often they are ridiculed for being Jewish. Have no knowledge of their religion, heritage or traditions. Children 7-16 engage in recreation and social activities such as swimming, billiards, air hockey, ping pong, board games, arts and crafts, get free checkups.

Thousands of Jewish cultural institutions or events spanning 15 countries.This cultural archipelago includes libraries, computer centers, museums, community centers, athletics, art exhibitions, poetry readings, concerts, theatrical productions, dance groups and culture clubs.

The celebration of Jewish holidays has enjoyed a tremendous resurgence in the former Soviet Union in both the home and in the community. It is the greatest opportunity to unite secular and religious Jews, and a doorway to Judaism for those who grew up in an atheist society.

The Federation helps local communities rebuild synagogues, maintain cemeteries and help the needy. We also build and maintain mikvaot, train mohels, certify kosher food, organize major holiday celebrations, train Hebrew scribes and publish and distribute religious texts.

With over 80 building projects under construction throughout Federation Communities, the FJC established a full time office of architects and designers to design the new buildings, draw up the renovation plans and thereafter they evaluate and work with local construction firms
