TAMBOV, Russia – For the Day of National Unity, celebrated in Russia on November 4, the Jewish community of Tambov, headed by Chairman Arkady Farba, met with Tambov mayor Petr Chernoivanov. The gathering also involved representatives of the Armenian, Tatar, Kurdish, Ukrainian, and Belarusian communities and religious denominations of the region, as well as foreign students studying in Tambov.
Mayor Chernoivanov warmly congratulated participants and wished peace and prosperity to all ethnic and religious communities of the Tambov Region.
“Friendship and unity between people have helped to save Russia from invaders and other problems since the early 17th century,” commented Mr. Farba.
Those who addressed the crowd spoke about the cohesiveness of the peoples of Russia, and, in particular, in the Tambov Region. Jews worked alongside others in building their city, improving the lives of local residents, raising the younger generation, and aiding their fellow citizens in difficult times.
Participants then remembered the departed with a moment of silence and a performance by the Fifth Ocean Choir of Tambov, who were met by a wave of applause. The audience was moved by the recital of Yevgeny Yevtushenko's poem "Babi Yar" and the song "A Yiddishe Mama" sung by members of the Jewish youth club.
The Jewish Community of Tambov is a member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia.
