KALUGA, Russia – In the Kaluga Region, the Teachers Center that operates under the aegis of the Jewish community of Kaluga, held an event celebrating the tenth anniversary of its founding. The event involved speeches followed by a lively and uplifting concert.
One of the main speakers at this event was Grigory Altman, the chairman of the local Jewish community. Mr. Altman described the activities of the Teachers’ Center and its history, as well as the work carried out by several of its founders, S.L. Spigelman, T.A. Altman and V.I. Feldman.
Government officials were on hand to share this moment with the Jewish community. I.A. Berestnev, the head of the Kaluga Region’s Department for Relations with Community Organizations, congratulated the community on this milestone and presented a letter of commendation from the region’s governor, A.D. Artamonov. The Jewish community also received letters of congratulation from the president of Azerbaijan and the head of the Dagestani community in Kaluga.
Community leaders presented gifts to a number of community activists, after which participants enjoyed a concert that featured the Kaluga Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Alexander Levin, a member the community. Apart from performing pieces from a wide array of Jewish composers, the orchestra also performed klezmer music and variations on other traditional and popular Jewish melodies.
Soloists William Tantlevsky and Alla Khakimova, both Jewish community members, also entertained the audience. There was an especially large turnout for the event.
