YEREVAN, Armenia - The Jewish community of Armenia has spent much effort in resolving the problems they face today in obtaining kosher food. While kosher food products imported from Israel, USA and Europe are typically available in the major cities of the CIS, their high prices make such products inaccessible to most members of the Jewish community in Armenia.
In order to make kosher food available for every Jew, Chief Rabbi of Armenia Gersh Meir Burshtein, who also represents the American Association on Kashrut 'OU', has managed to arrange for the production of kosher canned fruit, juices, vegetables and jam in Armenia. These products are also to be exported to Israel, USA and Europe.
Representatives of the Jewish community supervise cow milking and produce of 'Chalav Isroel' milk products, small amounts of kosher cheese and sour milk products. The local community is also planning to operate a kosher cheese-producing factory.
"We are grateful to businessmen dealing in kosher imports for making kosher food available to Armenia's Jews. However, local producers are also interested in meeting the demands of the local Jewish community, not to mention the additional opportunities it may open for exporting kosher food products to different countries of the world," said Rabbi Burshtein.
