DONETSK, Ukraine – The Jewish community of Donetsk has concluded the family camp "Beyachad (“Together”) 2010." Participants at the retreat included children and teenagers, mothers and fathers, and grandparents.
This year’s family retreat was held in the village of Sedovo, situated on the coast of the Azov Sea. The gathering brought together 130 people from cities throughout Ukraine and as far away as Russia, who came to relax and be rejuvenated in a Jewish environment.
From early morning to nightfall, the schedule was organized for both young and old. The program included sports, craft workshops, multi-generational group activities, singing and dancing, and more. There were also plenty of opportunities to make new friends.
In addition to the scheduled recreational activities and leisure time, Beyachad 2010 afforded participants the opportunity to explore their Jewish heritage and experience Jewish living first-hand. The daily schedule included prayers, Torah classes, and practical mitzvot like tefillin for the men and boys, and Shabbat candle-lighting for the women and girls. Shabbat was especially exciting, with festive meals, songs, prayers, the Torah reading, and lots of good company and spirit.
As for the children, the camp counsellors at Beyahad 2010 guided them in a variety of activities, games, and contests. The youngsters participated in all evening events, including a game-show style quiz of Jewish knowledge where a team of youngsters bested the adults! The retreat left everyone with a lot of memorable experiences, new friends and heightened Jewish pride and knowledge.
