ZHITOMIR, Ukraine – The Jewish community of Zhitomir has just published the first issue of its newspaper. Still without a name, the editorial staff announced a contest to come up with the best name for this new periodical, the winner of which is to receive a prize. With an editorial staff headed by Rabbi Nachshon Rubin, the Assistant to Rabbi Wilhelm, this newspaper is distributed at no charge and will be delivered to every Jewish family of the city.
This initiative is supported by the Association of Zhitomir Jews in Israel, which aims to unite Jews from this Ukrainian city wherever they may live.
It is highly symbolic that this newspaper was launched on the eve of the most cheerful holiday of the Jewish calendar, Purim, a holiday which symbolizes the power of the Jewish spirit. This newspaper will assist in uniting Jews in order to create a strong Jewish community.
This first issue features an address by Rabbi Shlomo Wilhelm, the Chief Rabbi of Zhitomir and Central and Western Ukraine. It leads into a profile of Jewish life in this city and news from the Ohr Avner Chabad Day School, Machon 'Chaya Mushka' and 'Machon Menachem' College. The section 'Mazl Tov' congratulates community members, after which there is a special feature on Purim, which offers broad information on its history, traditions and a recipe for traditional 'homentaschen'. The final pages of the newspaper feature advertising and various announcements.
