MOSCOW, Russia – The General Prosecutor of Russia Vladimir Ustinov has held a meeting with the Chief Rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar. The parties discussed the problem of anti-Semitism regarding the so-called "Letter of 5000", a controversial letter that accuses Jewish organizations of unwanted and over-excessive activity. It was signed by thousands of people, including numerous prominent public figures, and submitted to the General Prosecutor’s Office.
While speaking with the Prosecutor, Rabbi Berel Lazar voiced his anxiety since this anti-Semitic letter has been published once again. "We think that such ways of gaining political points or cheap popularity are impermissible," said the Chief Rabbi of Russia. He also expressed his expectation that the General Prosecutor’s Office would give a qualified assessment of this action.
Vladimir Ustinov replied that his office cannot take measures regarding this letter until the activity of the letter’s authors first receives a professional evaluation. For this purpose, a special permanent committee is currently being formed in order to provide a qualified assessment of any activity aimed at raising international hostility in Russia.
Rabbi Lazar and Vladimir Ustinov additionally discussed the problem of extremism among today's youth.
