KIEV, Ukraine – President of Ukraine Victor Yuschenko called on society to unite in condemning any manifestation of anti-Semitism and xenophobia, stating that, in these regards, Ukrainian authorities have to take a harder position while protecting the rights of citizens of all religions and nationalities.
In response to this statement, Chief Rabbi of Ukraine Azriel Chaikin expressed appreciation on behalf of himself and Jewish communities across the country, regarding the fact that President Yuschenko has cleared any doubts regarding his position regarding anti-Semitism and xenophobia in Ukraine. Jewish organizations operating in Ukraine have repeatedly expressed anxiety over the recent rise in anti-Semitism, especially with respect to anti-Jewish actions taken by the Inter-Regional Academy of Personnel Management (MAUP).
Rabbi Chaikin also mentioned the upcoming 'Conference on Problems in Combating Anti-Semitism and Xenophobia', which will take place December 15th in Donetsk. Its organizers and participants concur that the problem of growing xenophobia and anti-Semitism constitutes one of the most serious problems and threats to civil society within Ukraine.
"We call on Ukrainian authorities at all levels to support public endeavors, not only in their struggle against anti-Semitism and xenophobia, but also on the issue of strengthening the spirit of tolerance towards and mutual respect for all ethno-religious groups, which share pride in today’s Ukraine," expressed Rabbi Chaikin.
