Purim Unites Jews of Armenia

Wednesday, March 10 2004

YEREVAN, Armenia - Jews of Armenia and Israelis residing in Armenia crowded into Yerevan's synagogue to listen to the readings from 'Megilat Esther'. Everyone enthusiastically sounded their noisy rattles every time they heard the name of Aman.

The synagogue also hosted a festive meal and a concert. Dressed in carnival costumes, pupils from the 'Torah Ohr' Sunday School opened the concert with a clown act and songs. Members of the Jewish Youth Club followed up with a Purim version of a popular television talk show, where the chief characters were Esther, Akhashverosh and other Purim personages. A lottery ended the celebrations.

The Head of Armenia's Department of Religion and National Issues, Granush Akopyan, addressed the audience, emphasizing the great importance of this celebration in the process of national revival.

This Purim event united all Jews of Armenia. "Only Jewish unity for Torah and mutual respect will save us and lead out of the Galut", said Chief Rabbi of Armenia Gersh-Meir Burshtein.
