Lugansk Jewish School Offers Rural Kids New Verve

Tuesday, September 13 2005

LUGANSK, Ukraine – Children attending the 'Beit Menachem' Boarding School, run by the Ohr Avner Foundation, have once again gathered for the launch of a new school season. Pupils welcomed six more students this year. Operated by the Jewish community of Lugansk, the school is giving a new zest for life to kids, all of whom come from underprivileged families and many of which are destitute and experience social problems.

Two of them, Igor and Sveta Kolpachev from nearby Alchevsk, were invited to enroll at the boarding school last year when, after five long years of being separated from their mother, they were finally reunited as a family. After some time getting reacquainted with their mother, the children will now be receiving the best education there is to offer at the 'Beit Menachem' School and will enjoy frequent visits with their mother.

Masha Zayets, another new student, came to 'Beit Menachem' from a Foreign Language School in the nearby town of Krasniy Lyuch. She has continued her studies successfully at the Jewish school, where she keeps enjoying studying languages in addition to new and interesting Jewish subjects. Another boy from her hometown, Sasha Brodsky, has just joined the Jewish school after six years of study at the local Music School. The school is pleased to welcome this talented young man, who is the winner of the first prize at the CIS-wide violinist contest.

First-grader Vladik Kolesevich was brought to 'Beit Menachem' by his grandmother, who felt that the Jewish Boarding School would be the most effective way for him to apprehend the culture of his people before moving to Israel, where his mother currently resides.

These stories testify to the fact that the good reputation of the Jewish Boarding School is spreading far beyond the city. Parents do not have to be convinced to send their children to the school; rather, rural Jewish families are willing and eager to offer their kids a genuine Jewish education at this highly-recommended educational institution. The number of students is growing from year to year, helping more young Jews to regain their national roots and traditions.
